Benefits of Waxing

Here are a few reasons to wax over shaving

First and foremost, waxing is for EVERY body, EVERY shape, EVERY size!!!  Waxing is a semi-permanent method of hair removal that results in smooth, hair free skin for up to several weeks. You can wax any area you currently use a razor on!

Shaving is time-consuming which may need to be done several times a week and can also cause irritation to the skin. Waxing, on the other hand, is convenient because it only has to be done every 3-4 weeks.

Waxing exfoliates the skin by picking up dead skin cells and leaves skin looking and feeling smoother than it would after shaving.

If you wax on a consistent basis and perform proper after care, your hair will grow back finer, thinner, and regrowth will slow down considerably.

Before Your Appointment

A few tips before coming for your wax

Let your hair grow. Don't book an appointment until you haven't shaved for at least two weeks. Ideally, you should have 1/4 inch (size of a grain of rice) of hair in the area you want to wax.

Avoid waxing when your skin is sensitive. Sensitive skin does not make for a pleasant waxing experience. The best time to wax is a week after your menstrual cycle, when your pain threshold is highest. Though you can get waxed during your time of the month, it is highly discouraged. Also, do not schedule an appointment just before or after a day you plan to spend lots of time outside. If you get a sunburn, freshly waxed skin will be painful. If you need to spend time outside, wear SPF 50+ sunscreen and re-apply every few hours.

Do not wax for the first time before a special occasion. Avoid scheduling an appointment right before a special event, wedding, vacation, or photoshoot. Skin reacts differently to waxing, especially the first time. Your skin may experience redness, bruising, or irritation. Try waxing for the first time weeks before a special event so you know what to expect.

Caffeine, Alcohol, Marijuana?  Please refrain from caffeine, alcohol and marijuana before your appointment. These are stimulants and will increase the sensitivity and/or pain.

Exfoliate your skin. One day before your appointment, exfoliate in the shower to remove dead skin and lift trapped hair. Exfoliating will reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs after the appointment. DO NOT exfoliate the same day you plan to wax.

Moisturize and hydrate your skin. After you exfoliate, apply a moisturizer to your skin. This will hydrate your skin and keep it soft until the day of the appointment. Exfoliation can leave your skin dry, so always moisturize afterwards. Also drink plenty of water on a regular basis.  Hydration! Hydration! Hydration!

Try taking a pain relief pill. If you're sensitive to pain, take an ibuprofen-based pill before your appointment to reduce pain and inflammation. Take the pain relief pill an hour before your appointment so it kicks in when you need it and lasts throughout the appointment.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing to the appointment. Don't wear skinny jeans or tight fabrics to your appointment. After your skin has been waxed, you'll want loose and comfortable clothing to avoid irritating the skin.

After Your Appointment

a few tips for after your wax

For 24 hours after your wax: No swimming; No hot tubs; No baths. Your pores are completely open and susceptible to bacteria. Do not work out.  Do not lay in the sun or use a tanning bed. These will irritate your skin even more.

Exfoliate your skin. You may start exfoliating two days after your appointment, then approximately every other day, one day before your next wax.. Exfoliating will reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs.  I also sell some fantastic products to help care for your freshly waxed skin and keep ingrown hairs at bay (see below).

Moisturize and hydrate your skin. Continuing moisturizing your skin as normal and drinking plenty of water on a regular basis.  Hydration! Hydration! Hydration!

Consistency is key!  Waxing regularly will allow for better results.  If you wait too long, hair will start rooting back in and it'll be like starting over at your next visit. Book your next appointment before you leave.

NO SHAVING!  In order to get your hair to be on the same growth rate, you cannot shave at all. Not only do I need hair to grab at your next wax, but shaving will reverse the baby fine hair that has come in.

What's the point of getting rid of the hair if it's replaced by red, itchy, and bumpy irritation? You have to take care of your skin when you wax or you WILL get ingrown hairs, bumps, and irritation. Deck Polish was designed to prevent these problems. Regular waxing (or shaving) can also strip your skin of its natural oils, making it a must to replenish your skin with high-quality emollients like the ones found in Deck Polish.

  • Amino acids, Comfrey and Natural Anti-inflammatories help heal and soothe the skin from all types of hair removal.
